Young Wu's History

Early life

Wu was born to the First Spinjitzu Master, along with his older brother, Garmadon. He took after his father's Dragon heritage and went on to inherit Creation as his dominant power. The brothers often listened to stories about their father's past adventures and wanted to be like him. When the brothers were young, the First Spinjitzu Master explained to them that one day they would become bearers and teachers of the legacy of Spinjitzu. This fact worried Wu, and from the beginning he took studying and training very seriously because he did not want to disappoint his father.

Wu then began writing a journal, writing down his father's lessons so he could learn from them later. Wu and Garmadon often trained their ninja abilities while their father watched them while he was drinking tea and admonishing them when they did something wrong. Despite their connection, they often fought, although their father told them that the brothers should not fight each other.

When Wu and Garmadon were young, they came across the Scroll of Forbidden Spinjitzu in their father's library and were reprimanded for it. Eventually, the brothers found it again and read it, with the young Wu wrote its secrets into his journal. Many years later, a wiser Wu realized that the scroll's secrets should never have been revealed, and placed a seal over them in his journal so that it could not be seen.

Meeting Aspheera

Thousands of years before the siege at the Monastery, Wu and his brother went to the lake, but Wu wanted to enter the Serpentine Valley and explore it there. Wu shrugged off his brother's warnings and the latter joined him to make sure he'd stay safe. The two were amazed by the Serpentine's way of life and were about to leave but were caught trespassing and were imprisoned by Mambo V. A guilty Wu was criticized by his brother until a Serpentine named Aspheera told them of how she was training to be a sorceress and offered to free the brothers, in exchange for them helping her in the future and they agreed. Aspheera freed them and told them to keep their promise in due time. Returning home, Wu and his brother found their father creating the Scrolls of Forbidden Spinjitzu. He asked them where they had been for so long and Garmadon lied to him that Wu caught a fish, but it broke the line and they spent the rest of the day trying to re-catch it. The he told them not to tamper with the scrolls and they must go to bed.

Grateful for the help, Wu returned to uphold his end of the deal, he and Aspheera became friends with him teaching her Spinjitzu. Garmadon caught him teaching Aspheera and warned him of how she can't be trusted, but Wu didn't believe him.

However, Wu discovered that Aspheera's learning of the art enabled her to usurp the previous Serpentine King, Mambo V. Distraught at what he caused, Wu gathered his brother and begged him for his help, with Garmadon agreeing. As Wu thought their father would understand, they armed themselves with the Scrolls of Forbidden Spinjitzu to have an edge against her and confronted her. Wu fought Aspheera and achieved victory while his brother similarly defeated her minions. Aspheera was subsequently imprisoned after Mambo took back power. Wu visited her in her cell, where she pleaded to Wu to free her, as she did him and his brother but he and Garmadon ignored her, this made Aspheera mad, and she called Wu "the treachourous deceiver."

When the brothers returned home, their father was angry that they had used the scrolls, taking them and hiding them in unknown places. And Wu began to worry that his father would never trust him again. Their father told them they were both a disappointment to him, and the words echoed to Wu's mind all night. Wu then finally decided to become more responsible.

Garmadon's accident

At some point after this, the family moved to the Monastery of Spinjitzu. One day, the two brothers were sparring and Wu's katana was accidentally knocked over the wall of the monastery. Despite his father's warnings to stay within the safety of the monastery, Garmadon went to retrieve it because Wu was too scared, and Garmadon took longer than expected to return. Eventually, their father went looking for him, only to find that Garmadon passed out, having been bitten by a snake.

Garmadon was ill for a time, tended to by his father and brother. Garmadon had been bitten by the Great Devourer, infecting his very being with pure evil by his father's old arch-enemy the Overlord, which awakened an undying thirst to destroy in Garmadon, though they did not know this at the time. As a result, Garmadon momentarily became violent and selfish, blaming Wu for his change. This initial effect was not permanent, but it was a harbinger of things to come.

Shortly after these events, the First Spinjitzu Master told his sons about the prophecy of the Green Ninja. Wu couldn't stop thinking about this prophecy and asked himself whether it was his destiny to become the Green Ninja or just to protect him.

During Wu's training in the monastery, he discovered what damaging effects Spinjitzu could have if it is not used properly. As he tried a movement called "Kick of Mantis", he turned his pelvis more than he had and kicked Garmadon so that he flew over the supporting beam and almost collapsed the entire roof onto him. Garmadon then attacked Wu with such anger as Wu had never seen before. In anger, he used Spinjitzu improperly and almost destroyed the whole monastery. However, his father managed to stop him.

A few years later, when the two brothers were teenagers, their father, who had hardly spoken to them in recent years, gave them a chance to redeem themselves. He called them to his room and told them that he was sending them on a journey to the northern ocean, where a special tea plant was growing that could help purify Garmadon of the evil that had inhabited him since the Devourer's bite. Along the way, they encountered and studied under a cat woman named Nineko who knew Spinjitzu, then found she was a sorceress planning on destroying the local villagers, leading to her defeat at their hands. Wu's soul was also sealed into a puppet at one point by the warrior Tanabrax, but was freed upon his death.

After the journey

As part of Wu's and Garmadon's training, their father sent them into the world to survive the wonders of the realm he had created, to meet the humans who inhabited it, and to learn about the challenges to be faced in protecting Ninjago. Wu hoped that on this trip his closeness to his brother would be restored, as when they were younger. They therefore wrote down the places and tasks they would like to do on the trip, but despite the fact that they went on the same expedition, their journeys took them to different places. Their list included a trip to the Corridor of Elders, where they wanted to take their climbing equipment, climb to the Wailing Alps, where they wanted to enjoy the view and take their earplugs, go to "Cross-country racing with Treehorns" in Birchwood Forest, then want to go for a seafood dinner in Stiix, whose cuisine Wu loved, and finally for a trip to the Holy City of Domu, where their father recommended many good books from their library.

Once during one fight, when Wu was young, he got a hiccup. However, he used it to his advantage, pretending one hiccup and together with it he inflicted an unexpected blow on his opponent.

Death of the First Spinjitzu Master

When Wu and Garmadon were young men, their father had Wu and Garmadon vow to protect the Golden Weapons and then passed away. Before he died, he told Wu he would leave him a message that would lead him to his final resting place. After he passed, Wu looked everywhere for it, not knowing it was on his father's staff all this time. Wu and Garmadon would remain allies and a team against evil, such as Samukai, who they encountered and defeated.

Wu learned of Nadakhan and his crew of Sky Pirates but did not encounter them himself, as he "was engaged in battles on the other side of the world" at the time.

When Wu and Garmadon learned of a blacksmith who had absorbed the powers of the Elemental Masters, they sought him out in Metalonia and tried to stop him. The Master of Amber tried to use the Urn of Enmity to absorb their powers, but the urn sucked his spirit instead. The brothers thought it was a fitting punishment for him so they sealed the urn away in a tomb.

Morro's training

Thousands of years after Aspheera's entombment, soon after his brother left to train under Master Chen, Wu found a young boy, Morro, rummaging through the monastery's trash cans in search of food. Wu took pity on him and trained him in the ways of the Ninja. He soon discovered that Morro was a descendant of the Elemental Master of Wind and believed him to be the Green Ninja. This ended up being his greatest regret as the thought of the power that came with the title made Morro incredibly arrogant and he flew into a fit of rage when the Golden Weapons did not react as they would when in the presence of the chosen one. Wu was disappointed, but still would not give him the Green Gi, as it was not his destiny. Wanting to prove his destiny wrong, Morro left vowing to find the tomb of the First Spinjitzu Master.

Serpentine War

Shortly after Morro's departure, Wu and Garmadon met a young woman, Misako, whom they both fell in love with and wanted only the best for her. Wu even taught her Spinjitzu, and they got very close during their training.[2] In their duels, Wu never defeated Misako because both weren't really trying.[39] Later, Wu wrote Misako a heartfelt letter confessing his feelings, but it was intercepted by Garmadon's master, Chen, who convinced Garmadon to sign his own name to it in place of Wu's in order to win Misako's affections.

Shortly afterwards, the Serpentine War began. Wu and Garmadon decided to unite the Elemental Masters and formed the Elemental Alliance, which opposed Anacondrai in the battle of Birchwood forest. During the battle, Wu saw his brother facing off against a warrior named Mogra, who sided with the Serpentine in hopes of becoming a king, Wu ran into battle with the alliance and warriors behind him. Together, the two brothers defeated Mogra using spinjitzu, but shortly before Mogra was taken away and brought to his presumed execution, he warned them of the snake in their garden becoming a serpent.[40] Unfortunately, the alliance was able to defeat Mogra, but the battle at Birchwood forest was lost when the Master of Earth turned against the alliance after falling victim to the Hypnobrai's hypnosis. Although they lost the battle, Garmadon got an idea and Sacred Flutes were created, with which the Serpentine were controlled and imprisoned in five separate tombs. The war ended and Wu, Garmadon and Mystake participated in the court of the Anacondrai generals as judges who banished Arcturus and other generals to the Cursed Realm.

Shortly after congratulating the Elemental Alliance on their victory against the Anacondrai, the Elemental Masters of Time, twins Acronix and Krux, turned against them, believing that Ninjago should be ruled by the most powerful. After the Elemental Masters were defeated by the Hands of Time, Wu came up with the idea to have the Masters of Fire and Water forged the Time Blades. When the weapons were done, he had the two rest as he and Garmadon donned the weapons and fought against the Time Twins.

After a short battle, the sons of the First Spinjitzu Master defeated them, used the gauntlets to absorb their powers. Wu and Garmadon agreed that the element of Time was too powerful, and performed a ritual to open a Temporal vortex, to send the newly empowered Time Blades to be lost in time forever. Refusing to be defeated, the powerless Time Twins broke free of the Elemental Masters and into the Vortex. Within the Vortex, Wu saw a blimp that told him the exact time Acronix would eventually return to Ninjago—forty years in the future.[43] He kept this knowledge in mind, but thought Krux to be lost to time forever, unaware he would be released from the Vortex and know of his brother's return.

Immediately after the Time Twins disappeared, the future Acronix and Krux appeared in a giant mech and an army of unfamiliar snake warriors. He, Garmadon, and the Elemental Alliance were no match for the Vermillion, but they were unknowingly assisted by the future children of Ray and Maya, Kai and Nya, pretending to be their parents. The Time Twins fled into time with the Iron Doom but were followed by "Ray" and "Maya's" Fusion Dragon. A mysterious individual riding the dragon, Wu's future self, tossed him the Reversal Time Blade. He gave it to Ray and Maya, who locked the Time Blade away in the Boiling Sea. Wu also heeded an instruction from his older self to obtain Obscuritea from Mystake, which erased his memories of the battle against the future versions of the Time Twins and the timeline of Ninjago was corrected.

Lilly's training

Although the next part, according to the comic, takes place after Garmadon's banishment, in order to fit the continuity, it must take place before the banishment. See here for further explanation.

Long before Wu trained Kai, Cole, Zane and Jay he had another student he taught for the ninja - Lilly. He meditated with her in the bamboo forest near the monastery, or fought and trained with her in the monastery. When Lilly left to complete dangerous missions, Wu always expected her to return. At one point, Lilly told Wu that her powers were strongest when she was closest to the earth. When Lilly returned from the mission in Shintaro Mountain, Wu welcomed her and was happy with her return. Shortly afterwards, he was present at the birth of Cole, who was to become his next student in the future.

Battle between brothers

When Garmadon married Misako and eventually fathered Lloyd many years later, Wu was happy for his brother, but also somewhat melancholy due to the affection he still personally harbored for Misako.

Garmadon eventually succumbed to the darkness from the Devourer and his Oni heritage and planned to steal the Weapons. But when he tried, Wu confronted him. It was up to him to quench his brother's thirst to destroy. The brothers fought, and Wu won the battle, but at a cost. The kimono he was wearing had a protection spell to keep him safe from evil. This in turn worked on Garmadon, and cast Garmadon into the Underworld, banishing him for what could have been eternity.

Peace returned to Ninjago, but knowing his brother's ambition to get all Four Weapons, he sealed each one away and placed a guardian to protect each individual one. He sealed the Sword of Fire in the Fire Temple, the Shurikens of Ice in the Frozen Wasteland, the Nunchucks of Lightning in the Floating Ruins, and the Scythe of Quakes in the Caves of Despair in hopes of Garmadon never being able to find them. Fearing his own demise one day, Wu created a map of the weapon's location and entrusted it with his old friend, an honest blacksmith.

Shortly afterwards, Wu's former student, Lilly, died, so Wu did not look for more students for a long time. Over the following years, Wu stopped writing in his journal, he grew a long beard and studied a lot.
