Wizard's Staff
What is Wizard's Staff?
History of Wizard's Staff
A wizard's staff was the primary tool and channel for power for the Istari, or wizards, who came to Middle-earth. There were five wizards total - Gandalf the Grey, Saruman the White, Radagast the Brown, and the two Blue Wizards whose names are not recorded. Each wizard carried a staff to focus their magical abilities and as a symbol of their status. Gandalf's staff was wooden and had a crystal orb at the top that could illuminate dark areas. Saruman's staff was described as black. Radagast's staff reflected his rustic personality, fashioned from a sapling. Their staves aided the wizards in their work - whether in council, on journeys across Middle-earth, or in defense against the forces of Sauron and Saruman. When their missions changed, the wizards sometimes received new staves, such as Gandalf's staff given to him by Galadriel after his resurrection as Gandalf the White, with power and wisdom greatly enhanced.
