Tobias Ford's History

Tobias Ford was a technician employed by StatiCorp. Attracted to a co-worker named Hannah Hutchins, who was responsible for equipment safety, Ford sabotaged machinery as an excuse to get Hutchins to visit him. However, his actions caused a Particle Accelerator explosion that killed three people and opened a portal to another dimension, which Ford was exposed to. While the community believed Ford to be one of the victims, Ford found himself trapped between the two dimensions, allowing him to exist on Earth and become invisible and intangible.

Ford spent his distorted existence following Hutchins, believing that he needed to atone for his sins and that the other dimension to which he was slowly being drawn was Hell. As Hutchins was blamed for the deaths caused by the accident, Ford killed those who harassed Hutchins in an attempt to protect her. His actions placed Hutchins on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s radar, prompting Ford to attack them. After S.H.I.E.L.D. discovered his existence and abilities, Agent Melinda May convinced him to let go of Hutchins and his hold on Earth. Ford then accepted and allowed himself to completely pass over into the other dimension.
