The-Powers-That-Be and The-Natural Order-of-Things warred in ancient times until détente was agreed. As part of the compact, they pledged to only work through their respective servants, the Avatar and the Centivars, and each of those must also have a Proxy to represent the other side.Over 1,000 years ago, a boy named Wyn was freezing in the cold. With his parents dead and no way to start a fire, Wyn inadvertently spoke words of power and The-Powers-That-Be answered in the form of a large, caring woman. As Wyn created a funeral pyre for his parents, The-Powers-That-Be appointed him as the Avatar.

The-Powers-That-Be (Earth-616) from G.O.D.S When Wyn fell in love with Aiko Maki, The-Powers-That-Be knew about Aiko's destiny as a Centivar of The-Natural-Order-of-Things and warned against their marriage. Despite this, they did not forbid it and Wyn and Aiko lived happily for many years until they broke apart due to the opposing factions. Moved by Wyn's loyalty and servitude over the years, The-Powers-That-Be gifted a future Wyn a choice to continue serving a higher power or to remake his past so he could live a simplier life with Aiko.
