Psycho Mantis's History

In his youth, Mantis lives in a small village in Russia. The first person whose thoughts he can read is his father: he discovers there only contempt and hatred towards himself. Indeed, his father hates him because he considers Mantis responsible for the death of his mother, who died while giving birth to him. Very afraid of his father, he kills him and burns his village to bury his past.

In 1976, he joined the XOF unit to participate in the B&B project. Reading the thoughts of Volgin's body terrifies him; it is on this occasion that he creates a second killer personality.

In 1984, The Sorrow caused significant damage to Mantis to punish him for his mistakes.

Later, members of the KGB are impressed by his talents and hire him by training him as a "Psychic Soldier". After a few years of service, he joined the FBI in the United States and thus became a profiler by reading the minds of killers and psychopaths so that we could stop them and anticipate their actions. He is then recruited by Fox Hound.

In 2005, Mantis took part in the uprising of Fox Hound members in Shadow Moses. His talents are notably used to brainwash the Genome Soldiers. Solid Snake kills Mantis in the commander's office below the warhead hangar, in a risky fight where Meryl Silverburgh, controlled by the latter, threatens Solid Snake with her Desert Eagle before pointing the gun at her. Just before dying, Mantis explains that he joined FoxHound to cause as many victims as possible and recounts the destruction of his village.

Feeling death prevail, Mantis shows Snake and Meryl the way to get to the Metal Gear REX hangar. He clarifies that this is the first time he has used his powers to help someone, Snake being according to him the only person he has met with a pure spirit.

“It feels funny… it feels… good…”1 are his last words. He is then taken away by The Sorrow.

Psycho Mantis reappears in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots as a Specter. He manages to force the B&B Corps to become ruthless warriors with his powers. He appears following the fight against Screaming Mantis who is revealed to be possessed by Psycho Mantis.

Soon after, his spirit disappears screaming, after The Sorrow appears and exorcises Mantis' spirit from the world of the living.
