Peter Quill's History
Early Life
Born on Earth to Meredith Quill, who died of cancer while he was still a child, the young Quill was abducted by Ravagers led by Yondu Udonta on the orders of Ego, his biological father who wanted to use his powers to achieve his expansion. Quill was delivered to Ego, who helped him to master his Celestial powers.
Arrival on Earth
Fleeing from his father, Quill used a spaceship and laid waste to several systems, including Asgard and Jotunheim, unleashing powerful outbursts of cosmic energy, until he was able to return to his home planet: Earth. With the US Air Force being unable to stop him, he crashed in the middle of New York City and emerged unscathed from his journey. He was immediately confronted by NYPD officers that were surprised by his appearance, and manifested hostility by levitating and blowing up their cars. He then wreaked havoc across Manhattan, which caused the authorities to assemble the Avengers.
Quill then headed to Coney Island, dealing heavy damage near an amusement park which caught his attention. Entering the park, he picked up a stuffed raccoon before blowing up the cabin he was standing in front of. He then enjoyed some time on a tilt-a-whirl, where he was attacked by a swarm of ants sent by Ant-Man. Afraid, he ran away from the insects, arriving inside a house of mirrors where Black Panther ambushed him with a photon grid trap. However, the device's activation caused Quill's stuffed raccoon to lose its head, greatly angering Quill who devastated the house of mirrors in a sudden rage outburst, driving away Black Panther.
Quill was also attacked by Goliath, but repelled him as well, before being targeted by the Winter Soldier piloting the Asis. Quill fired energy balls at the aircraft, missing it but hitting and destroying the spaceship that had been reclaimed by Wendy Lawson. As he was too much of a threat, Quill caused the Avengers to retreat, being barely affected by the Winter Soldier's grenade launcher. Quill then placed the Asis under his control, but before he could strike it down, he was hit by a massive lighting bolt manifested by Thor. Mistaking him for Eddie Van Halen, Quill fainted, enabling his capture by the Avengers.
Escape from the Avengers
Quill was imprisoned inside a S.H.I.E.L.D. Detention Cell while the Avengers discussed what they should do with him. He was approached by the young Hope van Dyne listening to music on her walkman, and noticed that she was enjoying one of his mother's favourite songs. Quill and van Dyne bonded over their love of music and the fact that they both had lost their mothers, which led to Quill being released from custody by van Dyne who used Pym Particles to reduce the size of his cell and open it before returning Quill to his normal size. Before parting ways, Quill was given van Dyne's walkman as a token of friendship.
Quill took a bus to travel to Missouri, refusing to listen to Ego trying to communicate with him. He headed to the graveyard where his mother was buried and knelt in front of her grave. There, unaware that he was being targeted by the Winter Soldier, he was approached by Ant-Man, to whom he explained that Ego was the true responsible for the damage Quill had perpetrated across the universe as he could control him. Quill also voiced his disappointment at the idea that he did not feel as he had returned home due to his mother's absence. As Ant-Man expressed his sympathy and shared his sorrow, Quill agreed to join the Avengers and help them against Ego, sharing a hug with Ant-Man.
Confronting His Father
With his new objective in mind, Quill boarded the Asis which soon flied to the Mojave Desert where the Avengers were on the verge of being annihilated by Ego. Using Ant-Man's size manipulation powers, Quill was able to retrieve the Celestial seedling that Ego needed to achieve his expansion on Earth, and infiltrated the mountain which Ego had built around himself. Quill then confronted his father, who admitted that he had killed Quill's mother to ensure his own plans.
Quill soon retaliated by destroying the seedling and absorbing its energy and, as Ego called him a disappointment, Quill corrected him by calling himself Star-Lord and unleashed a massive stream of cosmic energy at Ego, destroying his body and saving the Avengers in the process. In the wake of their victory, he shared another affectionate hug with Ant-Man before joining the team for a celebratory meal at the Pym Residence, where Quill, further befriending Hope van Dyne, was introduced to Goose, even though he admitted that he preferred dogs over cats. As Thor set out to journey into space to destroy Ego's planet that remained intact, Quill was among the team that decided to go with him.
Abduction
Along with countless other Universe destroyers and heroes, Quill was kidnapped by Doctor Strange, who kept him in a cell in the Sanctum Infinitum and planned on sacrificing them all to the Forge to recreate the universe he had previously destroyed. However, Quill was prevented from succumbing to this fate thanks to Captain Carter and Kahhori, who sent him home, and who were able to force Strange to give up on his plans.
