Raya and the Last Dragon

Namaari's History

When Namaari was 12 years old, she traveled with her mother, Chieftess Virana, and the rest of Fang??s army to the land of Heart. At first Namaari wouldn??t meet Raya??s eye, but after a Spine warrior made her giggle, she caught her eye. Chieftess Virana told Namaari, ??Go ahead. It??s all right.? From there, Namaari seemed to hit it off with Raya and the two girls made friends over being fans of Sisu. Hand in hand, they crossed the dragon bridge and led the way to the Heart Palace where festivities would take place.

Though all of the adults were extremely tense, Namaari and Raya were swapping stories and giggling as they bonded and shared food. Through their conversation, we learn that both Virana and Chief Benja are single parents. Namaari mentions that she hasn??t had rice in a while and says that Fang is broken on the inside. She then shows Raya an ancient dragon scroll that she claims she??s not supposed to have. Namaari tells Raya of Fang's legend, which says that Sisu is at the end of one of the many rivers branching off of Dragon River. She then gives Raya her Sisu necklace, saying ?? a dragon nerd to another dragon nerd?.

Inspired by this gift and the trust Namaari shows in her, Raya takes Namaari to the secret chamber that held the sacred Dragon Gem. Upon seeing the Dragon Gem for the first time, Namaari makes the symbol of respect; a circle made with her hands held at her forehead. She says that she can feel Sisu??s magic.

Shortly after arriving in the chamber, Namaari kicks Raya in the back. She tells Raya that they may have been friends in another situation, but Namaari needs the Dragon Gem for Fang. The girls fight and Raya almost wins, but Namaari shoots off a firework. The firework summons Fang warriors and their Chieftess, Virana. Namaari backs away and lets the Fang warriors take over the fight.

Chief Benja arrives in time to fight the Fang warriors. The warriors from the other lands file into the chamber and demand the Dragon Gem. Namaari looks to Virana for reassurance, her fists half raised, and when she finds it, she gets a look of determination on her face. A Fang archer levels a crossbow at Benja and shoots him in the leg. From there, chaos reigns as everyone tries to get to the Dragon Gem. The Dragon Gem breaks and the Druun are released. Namaari and her mother stay back and a Fang warrior brings them a piece of the Gem. Virana grabs Namaari by the wrist and flees with everyone else.

The Encounter in Tail

Six years after the Druun were released, someone breaks into the Fang palace to steal the ancient dragon scroll. Namaari knows that it??s Raya and goes on a hunt with four other Fang warriors, including Wahn and General Atitāya. She chases Raya all the way to Tail and finds Raya??s golden hair piece in the desert.

Wahn questions why they??re chasing after a useless old scroll and Namaari attacks him, knocking him into the dust. She makes it clear that no one is to question her. They ride down into a canyon with the shipwreck but they miss Raya.

The group catches up to Raya at the Tail Chieftess??s throne room. Namaari arrives just in time to hear Raya call her a binturi. She taunts Raya, calling her dep la (strangely beautiful) and demands to know why Raya is stealing Dragon Gem pieces. Raya blows her off and Namaari admits that until a few months prior, when Raya stole the dragon scroll, she thought that Raya had been turned to stone. Raya tosses Naamari the scroll and admits that she found Sisu. Namaari is startled. She thinks that Raya is lying to her and orders her warriors to take them prisoner.

Raya and Sisu escape by setting off a booby trap and then again by jumping off of a cliff into the water and sailing away on a boat. Instead of following them to Talon, Naamari decides to return to Fang.

As they pass over a rise near Fang, the group passes a field of dragons turned to stone. The other warriors rode on without stopping but Namaari paused to pay her respects. When no one was looking, she gazed upon them with reverence and bowed to them.

At Fang, Namaari listened outside the throne room to Virana and her advisors speaking. She interrupted, saying that she had a solution for Fang??s problems. Her solution was to go to Spine with Fang??s army and intercept Raya there, stealing the Dragon Gem pieces that Raya already stole. Although Virana is hesitant to agree to the plan, thinking that Raya won??t make it and that Namaari is being emotional, Namaari convinces her that this is the only plan that will work to safely expand Fang. Virana agrees and sends general Atitāya to ready the army.

The Fight in Spine

After arriving in Spine, Namaari demands that the people of Spine give her Raya, whom she claims is a fugitive from Heart. When nothing happens, Namaari orders her army to ??burn them out.? Her warriors are all armed with crossbows, their arrows flaming. Just then, the village gates open and Raya comes out alone. Namaari says that Raya and the Dragon Gem pieces are coming with her...and Raya challenges her to a one on one fight. Namaari agrees and the two of them fight.

Namaari kicks Raya??s butt in the fight. Raya keeps goading her on. Namaari is winning, about to punch Raya in the face, when a blanket of fog rolled over them and Namaari dropped Raya back onto the ground. Sisu bounded through the gate, growling and spewing fog everywhere. The Fang warriors yelled in terror and dropped their weapons, fleeing. But Namaari stood frozen even as Sisu approached her. Sisu bared her teeth but the longer they gazed into each other??s eyes, the more that Sisu??s anger was replaced by something else. Namaari??s eyes filled with tears. Then Sisu left with Raya and her band.

The Final Battle in Fang

After the fight in Spine, Namaari and the Fang army raced back to Fang. General Atitāya urged Namaari to take a safer route, but Namaari went with a shortcut instead so that they would beat Raya to Fang. Namaari wondered if Fang would offer up their Dragon Gem piece to help Sisu rid the world of the Druun. Helping the other lands went against everything that Namaari was taught, but she couldn??t help but think of how Sisu had looked at her with compassion and hope in her eyes.

As soon as they were at Fang, Namaari went straight to Chieftess Virana. She interrupted Virana??s history lesson - even though she enjoyed hearing about how Fang outsmarted the Druun - to tell her about Sisu. The children of Fang were excited to see Namaari, because she was their hero.

Before Namaari can tell Virana that she saw Sisu, Virana beats her to it. She seems disappointed in Namaari and Namaari is taken aback by her mother??s knowledge. Namaari wants to fix what they broke, but Virana convinces her that the other lands will blame Fang for what happened and not be so charitable. She says that with the Gem pieces and Sisu, Fang will be able to fix what happened and come out as the heroes. When Namaari points out that Raya won??t just give up Sisu or the Dragon Gem pieces, Virana says that they won??t give her a choice and tells Namaari that her part is done.

Later that night, while Namaari is in her bedroom worrying over what??s going to happen, a note appears on her windowsill. She reads the note proposing a meeting and opens a cloth bundle. Inside the cloth bundle is the Sisu pendant that she gave Raya six years ago. Namaari decides to go to the meeting and shoots off fireworks to signal her decision.

Namaari meets Raya on the bank of Fang. She brings a crossbow and the Dragon Gem shard. Raya says that she tried to take care of the pendant and calls herself a dragon nerd, which makes Namaari laugh. Namaari put the Dragon Gem on a rock between them and backed away.

Just then, Sisu emerged from the forest. Namaari gasped and bowed to her. She stood up...and readied her crossbow. It was pointed directly at Raya. She tells them that Sisu and the Gem pieces were going with her and warns everyone to stay back. Raya tries to change her mind. Namaari cries but doesn??t lower her crossbow, saying that she doesn??t have a choice.

Sisu tries to convince Namaari not to shoot. She approaches her, talking in a soothing voice. Namaari lowers the crossbow a little. Raya??s sword hits the crossbow, causing the trigger to release. The arrow goes straight through Sisu??s heart. Namaari threw down the crossbow, grabbed the Gem piece, and ran for Fang Palace.

At the Fang palace, Chieftess Virana is a statue. Namaari hangs her head in grief. When Raya appears, she and Namaari fight brutally. Raya is fighting to kill Namaari. Namaari loses both swords and the dragon pendant. She scrambles for the dragon pendant, clutching it to her chest and crying. Namaari believes that because Raya didn??t trust Sisu??s judgement, that??s why Sisu is dead and that they??re equally to blame for it. She waits with eyes closed for Raya to kill her...but when nothing happens, she opens her eyes and sees that Raya is gone.

After Raya leaves, Namaari finally realizes that she needs to help her people. She puts the dragon pendant in her pocket. Then she uses the Dragon Gem to save Raya, Tuk Tuk, and a group of Fang children from the Druun. After the ground collapses and the group fall into an underground cave, Namaari is still on her feet and trying to ward off the Druun with the others.

Raya gives Namaari her Dragon Gem, then steps out of the protective circle and is turned to stone. Namaari is in shock. She can feel the warmth of Raya??s hand in the Gem shard. Boun is the next to give Namaari his shard, followed by Tong and Noi. They all turned to stone.

Namaari had what she wanted, all of the Dragon Gem pieces. She saw an exit and was tempted by it...but as she looked at the group of stone people, Namaari thought about the look on Raya??s face. How it was full of compassion and hope and trust - just like Sisu. Namaari hurriedly put the pieces of the Dragon Gem back together, then put her hand on Raya??s shoulder and turned to stone.

Kumandra

Namaari wakes from her state of petrification with a gasp. She and Raya lock eyes and an understanding passes between them. They are now allies and the past is in the past. Raya helps Namaari out of the sinkhole.

Then the dragons appear. Sisu is resurrected and reunites with her family and with Raya and the others. Namaari watches their reunion with her head bowed in shame and tears in her eyes. Sisu pulls Namaari close to the group with her tail and they all share a group hug, everything forgiven.

Chieftess Virana wakes up and accompanies Namaari to Heart. They bow deeply when Chief Benja sees them and begin to head across the bridge with the rest of the five lands, now united as Kumandra.
