Yang Xiao (楊逍; Yáng Xiāo) is the Bright Left Messenger (光明左使) of the Ming Cult.

Years ago, he was challenged by Guhongzi (孤鴻子; Gūhóngzǐ) was Abbess Miejue's senior who challenged Yang Xiao to a duel. He borrowed Miejue's Heavenly Sword in the hope that it would give him an advantage. However, he lost to Yang Xiao and the sword was seized from him before he could even unsheathe it. Yang Xiao made some unkind remarks, threw the sword to the ground and walked away. Guhongzi felt disgraced and insulted and eventually died from sheer frustration. His death caused Miejue to bear a grudge against Yang Xiao and the Ming Cult.

A period of time later, Yang Xiao encountered Miejue and a number of her disciples. During the conflict, he kidnapped Ji Xiaofu (紀曉芙; Jǐ Xiǎofú), Miejue's star apprentice and the fiancée of Yin Liting, the sixth of the Seven Heroes of Wudang. Ji Xiaofu falls in love with Yang Xiao instead, later leaving both him and the Emei cult to raise her daughter in secrecy, whom she names "Buhui" (literally "no regrets") to reflect her love for Yang Xiao. Ji Xiaofu is later killed by Miejue when she refuses to go back and kill Yang Xiao. The young Zhang Wuji takes Buhui to the Ming Cult to be raised by her father. Wuji then says good-bye to the two and leaves to live a nomadic lifestyle.

During the period of internal conflict in the cult, Yang Xiao served as the cult's acting leader and attempted to master part of the "Heaven and Earth Great Shift" to secure his legitimacy as there were others who disapproved of his leadership. However, the cult remained divided. After Zhang Wuji returned and became the cult leader, Yang Xiao served as his adviser and becomes his close friend and confidant, though he would occasionally pass plans without Wuji's consent for the good of the order.
