Jormungandr's History

Jörmungandr was the daughter of Loki and Angboda. She was a serpent who wrapped around the entire world, but could also take the form of a woman. She was portrayed by Swedish singer/songwriter Tove Lo in the fifth episode of Twilight of the Gods, "The Scapegoat God," appearing unvoiced in other episodes. Jörmungandr is based on the character of the same name from Norse mythology.

Jörmungandr was born to Loki Laufeyson and Angboda of the jötunn. She was a serpent who could take a humanoid form, shapeshifting like her father before her. When her younger sister, Hel, was born, Thor arrived to take her from the family and cast her into the nether. He would take their brother, Fenrir, as a pet for the Aesir, but just as he prepared to state Jörmungandr's fate, she shifted into her serpent form and bit him. He smashed her against the rocks and cast her into the river, where she was washed to sea, where she eventually grew so large that she encircled the world.

A prophecy claimed that Ragnarök would end the gods and if Jörmungandr would spill Thor's seed, with Hel's help, their fates would be tied, and both would lose their lives during Ragnarök. Loki attempted to take her place, but the prophecy wasn't meant for him, so he could not save his daughter. Killing Thor was the only way to free their family, so even if it meant death, the sisters set their plan in motion. Jörmungandr created a wave that would overturn a boat so the oarsmen would pray to Thor for better winds. Hearing their call, Thor arrived to find Jörmungandr, who went to him as a woman and seduced him.

Loki planned to use Sigrid's vengeance to prevent Ragnarök by having her kill Thor before it could come to pass. His plan failed, so when Odin looked into the future, he saw the death of his son, Thor. When Ragnarök came, Thor and Jörmungandr would battle, resulting in both of their deaths.
