Bontu (God of Ambition)

Bontu's History

The crocodile-headed Bontu was the Amonkhet god of ambition. She was felled during the Hour of Devastation.

Bontu and her sibling deities looked over the plane of Amonkhet until the day of Nicol Bolas's arrival. Despite their best efforts and fierce resistance, the gods were forced back to the final stronghold of Naktamun. While her siblings did their best to keep the Elder Dragon out, Bontu realized the futility of the effort and instead betrayed her fellow gods and followers to forge an alliance with Bolas. In exchange for her betrayal, she was not rewritten like the rest of Amonkhet's gods.

Bontu took to her new purpose with great aplomb. She taught the people of Amonkhet that no one is born strong — they become it. She considered pride and cunning to be tools for self-growth. Bontu was closely associated with the process of embalming both for the initiates who attained a Glorious Death and those who fell ingloriously along the way. Bontu oversaw the fourth trial, that of Ambition. This tested the willingness of the initiates to do what must be done. Some had to sacrifice themselves for the crop, and some were culled to further the chances of the others. She was the most solitary of the gods due to the nature of her position. She spent most of her time in the embalming chambers overseeing the creation of mummies, taking the best for herself. She believed herself to be the most worthy of Amonkhet's gods both due to her inherent attributes and her loyalty to the God-Pharaoh.

After the return of Nicol Bolas, Bontu revealed that she had helped Nicol Bolas conquer Amonkhet, betraying her plane and her godly siblings to fulfill her own ambition. During the Hour of Devastation, she was ordered by Bolas to kill Hazoret, but after defeating her sister, Bolas betrayed Bontu and killed her, leaving Hazoret the only god of Amonkhet alive.

Bontu's service to her duplicitous master was not over, however, as her inert form was taken to be coated in Lazotep and turned into a God-Eternal.
