Blue Blanket's History

"Laundry day" I sighed as I set the plastic basket filled with clothes down on the unfinished basement floor. I opened the door of the slightly beat up washer, humming as I threw the clothes from the basket into the shiny metal barrel. So focused on the task at hand that I don't notice the drips of liquid falling onto my hand from above.

'Weird', I thought.

Was there some sort of leak?

I examined the droplet and realized that this was not water...the droplet seemed to hold a galactic quality, deep blue and purple nebulae surrounded by bright stars on a canvas of void black.

Another drop fell from above, and I looked up to see the entire ceiling painted in this substance, as if the ceiling of the room had been torn off and replaced with the infinite cosmos.

I gasped and turned to leave but stepped in something cold and tar-like. I looked down to find the same celestial substance coating the floor around me.

"ohhhhhhkay..." I chuckled nervously as I tried to take a step back, but the substance did not let up and I ended up slipping out of his shoe and fell back onto the washer and onto the floor. Real smooth.

"wow, okay" I muttered as I rubbed my head.

It was wet.

He panicked, thinking he was bleeding, but instead of seeing red on my hand. I saw purple. The thick tar-like substance felt cold on my bare skin, and despite its visually looking like a very thick liquid, it felt light. Almost like...nothing.

Regardless of what it felt like, I wanted it off, sooner rather than later.

I frantically tore at the substance, trying to get it off my face, but it continued to spread. Enveloping the lens of my glasses and across my face and down my arm. Once it completely covered my face it was a blur. The next thing I remember is gasping for air before gripping something soft and my vision (and breath) slowly starting to return.

I stood over a drying rack, watching as the goop receded off my body.

And into my favorite blue blanket.
